LONDON: Talented Malaysians will be encouraged to return home if they are treated with respect and dignity, according to one of Malaysia’s longest-serving professionals in Britain.
Sels College London principal Datuk Yunus Rais said they must be accorded the same status as expatriates in line with their international standing.
And, world-class Malaysians do not come cheap, he said in response to Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr Fong Chan Onn's appeal to Malaysians who were experts in their fields to return home.
The minister had on Monday said the Government wanted to attract people like internationally acclaimed shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo, apart from scientists and medical experts.
Yunus, 72, who had been teaching English in Britain for over four decades, said those concerned must also make good use of the Malaysian's expertise and experience.
Yunus, who had been headhunted to teach English in Malaysia, said talents must be fully welcomed.
There must be material rewards, as they must be able to get something more than what they had been getting overseas.
Overseas Malaysian Executive Club chairman Datuk John Lim expressed confidence that younger Malaysians would return home once they had gained the necessary skills and experience.
But there must be a market for talents such as designers.
Otherwise, there is no point in them going back, he said.
A senior partner of UHY Hacker Young and director of UHY International Group of accounting and consulting firms, Ipoh-born Lim has become one of the most successful Malaysian chartered accountants since arriving here 36 years ago.
Asean-UK Business Forum chairman S.K. Lingam, 60, said many Malaysian professionals had done their part to help attract investors despite being in Britain.
“We feel we can serve Malaysia's interest better here as it's easier for us to interact with British and European investors and businessmen,” he said.
