Happy Puthandu to Malaysians

How many Malaysia Indians celebrate the Puthandu?

According to Wikipedia,

Puthandu (Tamilபுத்தாண்டுromanized: Puttāṇṭulit.'new year'), also known as Tamil New Year, is the first day of year on the Tamil calendar that is traditionally celebrated as a festival by Tamils. The festival date is set with the solar cycle of the solar Hindu calendar, as the first day of the month of Chittirai. It falls on or about 14 April every year on the Gregorian calendar.[1] The same day is observed elsewhere in South and South East Asia as the traditional new year, but it is known by other names such as Vishu in Kerala, and Vaisakhi or Baisakhi in central and northern India.[1]

The Indians in Malaysia should celebrate this day instead of Diwali. Puthandu is a cultural day but Diwali is a religious day.

Which is more important ? Should it be culture or religion?

Now, the Christians and other faith who follow, or use Tamil calender can do so. For example, a Chinese family has two calendar, one the lunar calendr and the other is the Tamil calender, the family can celebrate it with both for the new begining .

Unfortunately, the Indians in Malaysia have forgotten the day and the Malaysia Indian Congress (MIC), also does not do so though the Wikipedia said so.

In Malaysia and SingaporeTamils join Sikhs, Malayalees and Bengalis to celebrate the traditional new year in mid-April with leaders across the political spectrum wishing the ethnic Indian community for the new year.

MIC and MCA should resolve the political party registration and change to cultural organisation. This would reduce the racial tension in Malaysia. We have suggested that long ago, just search MIC, MCA on our blog.

How is the new year brings in for 2025?
