Malaysia is the only country in South East Asia which practises old colonial system.
How this old system still holds dear to the people?
It is because the political system which flanks from one side to the other. They, the politicians are not educationists. at least, the politicians who involve in education should quickly search for education system of the neighbour and the world, especially the best education system in the world, Finland.
Malaysia cannot move away too fast from the old system plus new rules, the 3R restriction. However, Malaysia can change the system of 6-3-2-2 to 6-3-3. Though the education ministry has abandoned the stand 6 examination, here and there, still calling to revive it.
Of course, they can revive the standard 6 examination but not put on the priority of selecting the pupils to the elites schools, like the MRSM etc.
Malaysia cannot afford not to have the standard 6 examination like the Finnish system, we can get the system from our South East Asia countries, like Thailand or Indonesia etc.
The standard 6 examination can be a stage to look at how the family plus the community supporting the learning. In Malaysia, most of them, the learning community is not link with the parents and social community. Thus, the standard 6 examination is solely the school responsibility, but does not reflect the responsibility from the community especially the parents.
If parents felt the school system should involve them, should tell them not to have children, you may have marriage.
Do away the upper secondary school level, that is the Tingkatan 4 and 5. After the middle school examination, that is 15 years old, the pupils can select their choice of studies, either the vocational or academics.
Those who are more interested in vocational skill training, they can opt for agriculture, mechanical etc options. Those who are interested in academic subjects can proceed to the art, science, commerce or literature fields. By the end of the three years of study, the vocational stream can be considered to go to technical universities after years of working. For the academics, no more 10 As or 15 As problem, all take the STPM examinations, and with the qualification for university entrance. One cannot deter the 15 years must go to the vocational training when we do not give them inspiration to do well in academics for the next 3 years.
Gradually, the people in Malaysia should be matured enough to see the things without the political lenses.
Religion courses should not be taught in the schools. It is the external learning subject negotiating between the parents and the children, or learners.
We have talked much about education and if you were interested, you could search for it in our blog with education.
