PKR councillors boycott swearing-in of MPSP president
By ZULKIFLY MOHAMED
BUTTERWORTH: Citing betrayal by the state government, eight of the nine PKR Seberang Prai municipal councillors boycotted the swearing-in ceremony of the new council president Mokhtar Mohd Jait.
This was a slap in the face of Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng who was present at the function together with newly appointed Deputy Chief Minister II Mansor Othman.
PKR whip Johari Kassim said the post should have been allocated to PKR candidate.
“The state government has betrayed us by appointing Mokhtar who is former Seberang Prai Utara district officer,” he told newsmen before Mokhtar was sworn in at the council’s headquarters in Bandar Perda.
Johari who is also state PKR liaison committee member said they had been lobbying for the post from the day the Pakatan Rakyat state government was formed after the general election last year.
“We are not happy because we were promised the post,” he said.
The sole PKR councillor present at the ceremony was Farid Arshad, the party’s Bagan division chairman.
There are 24 councillors in MPSP including 10 from DAP, PAS (two), NGOs (three) and the rest from PKR.
It was reported that several names from PKR had been speculated to fill up the post including Mansor before he contested the Penanti by-election.
Dr Mansor said he would raise the issue of missing councillors at the state liaison committee meeting.
Lim told newsmen said it was a PKR internal matter and he would leave it to the party to resolve it.
He said the appointment of Mokhtar as council president was announced by Mansor himself.
“You should go and ask the two PKR state executive councillors (Abdul Malik Abul Kassim and Law Choo Kiang) about the appointment.
“Don’t act as if you are a state executive councillor if you are not one,” he said referring to Johari.
State Local Government and Traffic Management committee chairman Chow Chow Kon Yeow said there was a meeting within Pakatan Rakyat over who should be appointed as presidents of the two municipal councils in Penang.
But there was no decision, he said.
