Missionary Schools in the 60''s would fine students caught speaking in any other languages during school time. Children from the remote areas in Cambodia are taught English and they further in for there is a thirst for Knowledge. Look at some of the Non malays students who write speak better BM then their Malay friends.... because there was a need to improve. teachers who cannot speak English should leave the profession and do something else.

When the first signs of decline were noted years ago, the proposal was to re-employ retired English teachers so that they serve to train successive batches while ensuring the maintenance of standards. That was quietly dismissed for one reason only: the retirees were not from the chosen race. Subsequently we saw farcical attempts to bring in Englishmen, Americans and passing white backpackers as English teachers and sent to rural schools - regardless of their command of English or their teaching abilities. Well, the tourists had a good time learning Malay and in some cases married local lasses who followed them back home. Then came the massive awarding of TESL/TEFL overseas scholarships to thousands who scarcely spoke the language. A majority returned... speaking perfect accent without the slightest trace of English. With no binding contracts, many skipped teaching for more glamorous outings. So we are where we are - still in search of a solution.

sub: Three days back I visited a secondary school in Rawang. I couldn’t believe. The school is in mass. I took a walk along the Corridors of the blocks. I found most of the class rooms no teachers. The pupil playing and running around. It was 2.30pm. I went on to few more blocks. I found some of the teachers Caring plates, food in and out of some class rooms. Know day the teachers are so busy of their kenduris and not bother to teach.
