Penang can change the traffic system

Traffic jam is a serious problem in Malaysia.

However, Penang state with the resource it has,the change of system and regulations would enable the people in Penang having better life quality.

Read the report below:

GEORGE TOWN, Dec 3 — The Penang government accumulated reserves amounting to RM1.82 billion for 2020 after spending a large allocation on helping those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The residents of Penang fond of showing their wealth but not health by putting two or three cars in front of the house.

It is nothing new for using the road tax to halt the increase buying of cars unnecessarily.

Here is the way Singapore government do it. Building more highways are not sustainable and environment friendly. The politicians in Malaysia only know how to mend the hole but do not find a way to stop the occurring of the hole.

Vehicles older than 10 years in age also get hit with an additional surcharge on top of the regular tax rate, as illustrated by the table below:

Age of vehicleAnnual road tax surcharge
More than 10 years old10% of road tax
More than 11 years old20% of road tax
More than 12 years old30% of road tax
More than 13 years old40% of road tax
More than 14 years old50% of road tax

Beside doing above, Penang state government has no power to change the system yet, if they were to again enter the Putrajaya, they should revamp the whole system

Now with the resources that Penang government has, the government should make the cars used on the road as follows:

1. day time

2. night time

3. day and night

The subsidy for the road tax only goes for the 1 and 2 categories.  In short, the 1 and 2 categories have the extra cars not for using all the time, day and night.

Get the car owners to submit the information and provide some subsidy for them to use it only at day time or night time. Putting a big sign in the car, as Penang government has no right to change the colour of the number plate, it would be other ways if the administration can think of it.

It might not be using millions of ringgit to subsidize these rich people who own more than ONE car.

At least, there would be some help for reducing the cars on the road. People would start to consider whether should have one car or more than one.

Let your fingers doing the walking, you can know the systems in the world. Of course, the embassy and high commissioner should always provide the basic information from the world for planning the new act and system.
