Penang LRT, wisdom or doom --Final Part

How the town planners in Malaysia look at the problem, especially, solving the problem.

LRT Penang is a part of politics, alluring the voters instead of solving the problems, especially the traffic jam.

As we have pointed out in Part One, the road tax for various cars should be increased, only the very rich would keep various cars at home, like our DPM, who has 10 cars.

Does the LRT in Penang carrying 10,000 passengers per hour ? If it were not, that would be a loss instead of profit.

As our blog presentation, we do not like to have long text as our readers are lack of time. They have to do more creative thinking reading our blog articles. Of course, they can come back to the blog as many times as they wish. Like this wonderful person, he only picked on the Bogota BRT accidents but not other successful places in the world.

The best BRT system in the world is in Bogota, Colombia but time has changed, the award of the best is by individual. If you supported his views on LRT, Penang lang are going to suffer more.

In fact, Malaysians are not new to the Bus Rapid Transit, Watch the video, Sunway Bus Rapid Transit for the Sunway business housing project.

Yes, we know that, designing the bus rapid transit needed a wider space but gazetting the bus lanes, will be much simpler.

You can read more about the Penang LRT on the Wikipedia.  Here are the steps to do to forgo building the LRT, save the 10 billion ringgit, but have income from renting the bus lanes to the bus company.

Disadvantages:

1. each station needs a parking space, acquiring the land for it, problem, cost is another matter.

2. constructing of depot for the LRT, you need more space.

3. maintenance of the LRT, requires huge amount of money later

4. no high capacity of passengers,at least 10,000 passengers per hour.

5. the passengers will abandon taking LRT later days when the thrill is over. The rich people have their cars equipped with air -conditioning facilities, nothing much affected.

Implementing the bus lanes for certain areas, changes are needed:

Advantages of bus lanes but not rapid bus transit

1. all passengers, now almost Rapid Penang is controlling the public transport, all passengers can use the either the Mutiara cards, different kinds or touch and go card. No selling of ticket on the bus. It is similar to pre-purchase of tickets.

In fact, all Malaysians are already selling the information to the Touch and Go company, each MyKad has the Touch and Go account, just activate the account, they can use the Mykad Touch and Go. Ipoh town bus service by MyBus is no longer using the cash but only accept the Touch and Go card. There it is similar to the Bus Rapid Transit system, no pre-purchase of the ticket is required.

2. do not have to facilitate the two ways bus service, it can be the next road, about a few hundred meters away. Walking 5000 steps a day is good for the health, in fact, few Rapid Penang buses have pasted the information but the wrong info of 10,000 steps a day. 5000 steps will attract people to do so, another 5000 to reach the mark is a torture for some. We have pasted the video in part one and here we paste it here again to correct the wrong concept of walking 10,000 steps

3. fine heavily for the private cars entering the bus lanes, even suspend the driving license for a few months if needed.  Can construct the low road divider for bus lanes, thus the car once enter into the bus lanes, has to wait for the long time to get out of the lane.

4. with bus lane, more spaces to plant trees and flowers. LRT would take up more spaces for plants and followers.

In the earlier proposed plan, the state government envisioned a 26.8km LRT line with 23 stations, costing nearly RM10 billion.

It was intended to be funded through the sale of the three reclaimed islands.

Now, the reclaim of the island has reduced the revenue, the money spending still the same, how would it be balancing the account. Of course, the ticket for LRT, middle class people are using, can afford to pay for it, long term, they would refuse to do so.

We will come back to discuss the issue of MRT, LRT in Kuala Lumpur.

They still have time to alter it before it is too late. Get the bus lanes for a 10km length for experiment. Asking Rapid Penang to buy the bus lanes and alter the traffic system is much easier instead of listening to all the so called experts with no sense of geographical knowledge and the passengers in mind.

Penang should not attract more people and investment, you may say, no money for the state, right, it should be from the central government. More investment can move to Seberang Jaya instead on Penang Island.

As we have repeatedly calling to change the housing act, less houses are built, more spaces for agriculture and the green spaces. The cost of houses will eventually lower.
